“I didn’t have a mission with this record, the process was much more relaxed. I was initially just interested in collecting raw audio material via a handheld tape recorder. I became infatuated with the act and the product of documenting candid moments and unrehearsed tunes on tape and so I came up with the idea to make a record around that experience. Each song contains some sample from tape, hence the title.
I think it is because of the recording process that this record feels more like a totem of time and place for me. Something that has marked my practice as a musician is the encryption of my life into song. There are samples here from nearly two years ago and thus many moments for me are captured in this record including some big ones like leaving my family home behind and saying goodbye to my dog. Friendships I value are also represented in this record as many of the people closest to me are heard in samples. While I don’t expect any listener to extract that from these songs, I do invite you to imagine the process, and the story within each sound so that you might reconsider the sounds in your everyday life. While many of us are capturing our lives in photos and video, I suggest audio may be a more evocative, and more intimate device of documentation.”
